Effective date: 7 October 2026
Hair Count: Salon Books ("Hair Count") is a bookkeeping app for hair salons and independent hairdressers, developed by Adri Vermaak (Google Play developer name "AdriV"). This policy explains what information the app handles and where it is kept. "You" means the salon owner or staff member using the app.
Summary
- Everything you enter is stored only on your own phone, inside the app's private storage.
- Hair Count has no server, no cloud database, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The developer does not receive, collect, sell or share your data or your clients' data.
- If you allow it, the app reads your phone contacts only to suggest names while you type. Contacts are never uploaded.
Information you enter in the app
To help you run your salon, the app stores the following on your phone:
- Your salon name, open days and the banking details you choose to show on payment slips;
- Your clients' names, WhatsApp numbers, preferred message language (English or Afrikaans) and payment references, including a short client reference the app makes from the first letter of the client's name and the last 4 digits of her number (for example S6849), which is put on WhatsApp slips as the EFT reference;
- Visits, services, prices, amounts and payment method (cash or EFT);
- Petty cash entries, and any photo of a till slip you choose to attach;
- Bank statement lines from CSV files that you download from your own bank and choose to import, used to match EFT payments to visits (the app does not connect to your bank);
- Your app username and password and your PIN, stored only as salted, one-way hashes (never as plain text).
This information is not sent to the developer or to anyone else. As the salon, you are responsible for the client information you enter (for example under South Africa's POPI Act).
Phone contacts
The Android app can ask for permission to read your contacts. It uses them only to suggest names and numbers while you type a client's name. Contacts are read on the phone and held in memory while the app is open. Only a contact you tap is saved, as a client's name and WhatsApp number in the app's own storage. Contacts are never uploaded, shared or changed. (Android also lists a "modify contacts" permission because the contacts library groups read and write access together; Hair Count never creates, edits or deletes contacts.) You can refuse or withdraw this permission at any time in Android Settings and type names in by hand.
When information leaves the app
Only when you choose to send it:
- WhatsApp: when you tap to send a payment slip, reminder or thank-you, the app opens WhatsApp with the message filled in. You decide whether to send it. WhatsApp's own privacy policy applies to messages sent through it.
- Excel export: when you export a takings sheet, the file is created on your phone and the Android share sheet lets you choose where to save or send it.
Backups
The app allows Android's standard device backup. If backup is switched on in your phone's settings, Android may include the app's data in your Google account backup. This is managed by Google and your phone's settings, not by the developer.
Security
Your data is kept in the app's private storage on your phone, behind the app login, with an optional PIN for money and settings screens. Because there is no server, the app does not send your salon data over the internet.
Deleting your account and data
Your Hair Count login exists only on your phone; there is no online account. Data stays on your phone until you delete it. To delete your account and all salon data:
- in the app, open More › Settings › Delete account and all data; or
- clear the app's storage in Android Settings › Apps › Hair Count › Storage; or
- uninstall the app.
Because the developer holds no copy, deleted data cannot be recovered. You can also email the address below with any questions about deletion.
Children
Hair Count is a business tool for adults. It is not directed at children and is not designed for use by anyone under 18.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
